Emergency lift call outs

A broken lift is an access problem. A lift with someone inside it is an emergency. Call us and you speak to an engineer — not a call centre — who will tell you what to do right now and get help moving.

If someone is trapped — before we arrive
  • Stay in contact with the passenger and keep them calm — lifts are ventilated and the car is the safest place to be.
  • Have them press the alarm button or use the car phone; leave the building power to the lift on so lighting and the alarm keep working.
  • Never force the doors or attempt to help anyone climb out — injuries happen during improvised rescues, not while waiting.
  • Send someone to meet the engineer at the entrance with keys to the machine room or control cabinet if you have them.
What we attend

Call outs we treat as emergencies

  • Passenger entrapments — safe release by an engineer, then diagnosis of whatever stranded the car.
  • Lifts stuck between floors — with or without passengers; often a safety-circuit or levelling fault.
  • Doors that won’t close or lock — the lift is unusable and, on an open landing, a fall risk.
  • Erratic behaviour — moving with doors open, stopping out of level, repeated tripping. Isolate the lift and call.
  • Safety-critical LOLER defects — a thorough-examination report that says “take out of service” gets a prioritised repair visit.
  • The only lift in the building — where a breakdown removes disabled access entirely, we treat it with emergency urgency even when nobody is trapped.

After the immediate emergency is resolved, you get a plain-English account of the cause and a written quote for any follow-on repair — the same day wherever possible. For the full repair service, see commercial lift repairs.

Frequently asked

Emergency call out questions

01 Someone is trapped in our lift — what should we do first?

Reassure them through the doors and have them press the lift's alarm button or use the car phone if fitted. Do not try to force the doors or help anyone climb out — a lift that moves or re-levels mid-rescue is far more dangerous than one that stays put. Then call us with the building address and lift location.

02 What counts as a lift emergency?

Trapped passengers, a lift stuck between floors, doors that will not close or lock, burning smells or unusual noises from the machine room, and any safety-critical defect flagged on a LOLER report. If in doubt, call — an engineer will tell you over the phone whether it can safely wait.

03 What information should I have ready when I call?

The building address, where the lift is in the building, the make of lift if known (from the machine plate or controller), what happened, and whether anyone is inside. A photo of any error display helps us arrive with the right parts.

04 Should we switch the lift off after a breakdown?

If the lift is empty and behaving erratically — moving with doors open, stopping out of level — isolate it at the mainswitch and put it out of use with signage until an engineer attends. If someone is inside, leave power on so lighting and the alarm keep working, and call us.

05 Do you attend emergency lift call outs nationwide?

Yes — mainland UK, with engineers covering the Midlands, London and the South East, the South West and the North of England. Response is prioritised by risk: entrapments first.
