Car showroom door repair — what actually fails, from four real dealership jobs
A car showroom is one of the few commercial buildings where the doors are genuinely part of the product display. The customer entrance frames the first vehicle a visitor sees; the glazing runs floor-to-ceiling so stock is visible from the road; and the manufacturer’s dealer-network standards dictate everything from the finish on the pull handles to how fast the sliding doors part when a customer walks up. When something fails, the site team isn’t just managing a maintenance issue — they’re managing a hole in the brand experience the franchise is audited on.
That context shapes how we approach dealership work. Every job below is one we’ve completed and photographed — four different failure modes, four different marques, one pattern: diagnose from photos first, arrive with the right parts, and give the dealership its entrance back the same day.
Showroom sliding doors: the hardest-working glass on the forecourt
The big automatic sliding doors on a showroom frontage do something high-street auto doors rarely do — they open tall and wide enough to drive vehicles through, then go back to serving walk-in customers all day. That dual role means showroom-scale track lengths, heavy glass leaves and drive gear working at the top of its rated load. At the Mercedes-Benz showroom in Bristol we repaired multiple sliding doors across the same frontage — restoring smooth, safe operation on doors the showroom depends on for both customers and vehicle movements, and bringing them back within BS EN 16005 safety expectations.
Activation and access: when the door is fine but nothing tells it to open
Not every “broken door” is mechanical. At the MINI showroom in Newport the automatic door itself was healthy — the activation switch that commands it had failed, leaving staff working around a door that wouldn’t respond. Swapping the switch is quick; knowing that’s the fault before anyone is on site is the part that saves the dealership money. It’s why we ask for photos and symptoms up front: activation, sensors, safety beams and drive faults each look identical from the showroom floor and cost very different amounts to fix.
Showroom glazing: presentation damage is real damage
Showroom glass takes knocks — vehicle deliveries, door swings, stone strikes — and because the whole frontage is display space, a failed or damaged unit shows. At BMW specialist Rayner in Worcester we replaced failed double-glazed units like-for-like, keeping the frontage clean without replacing framing that was still sound. On dealership work the glass specification matters as much as the fit: toughened or laminated to suit the location, sized to the existing aluminium sections, and sourced fast enough that the frontage isn’t boarded for weeks.
Beyond the showroom floor: van centres and trade counters
Dealership groups don’t just run glass palaces. Van centres, Express Fit bays and trade parts counters take a different kind of punishment — trade customers through the same aluminium entrance door from open to close, every working day. At Volkswagen Van Centre Liverpool in Speke, that traffic had worn out the concealed transom closer in the customer entrance. We lifted the door, opened the transom case, fitted a new Adams Rite ARC51N with a fresh arm and channel, re-glazed the screen and had the entrance back in service the same day — the kind of job where the shopfront afterwards looks untouched, and the door just works again.
How dealership door repair works with CDMS

Engineers arrive with parts matched to the diagnosis — closer bodies, arms, switches, glass ordered to spec — because a dealership can’t have its customer entrance apart twice. Work is scheduled around trading and vehicle movements, finishes are matched to dealer specification, and automatic-door work is documented to BS EN 16005 in a format that slots into the brand’s national facilities reporting.
