Why a slamming aluminium door is a closer problem, not a door problem
The doors at Sentinel House are heavy bronze-finish aluminium leaves in a glazed porch, and nothing about the leaves themselves was wrong. What had gone was the hydraulics. A concealed transom closer lives in the head of the frame above each door and controls it through a slide arm in the top rail; when the internal seals wear, the oil that damps the closing swing bypasses the speed valves and the door simply falls shut under its spring. The photographs show the original grey units still in the transom with their adjustment labels long faded — turning the closing and latching screws on a closer in that state changes nothing, which is exactly what the practice had found.
We replaced both units with new Axim concealed closers, the current industry-standard pattern for this size of transom box. Each leaf was lifted off its threshold pivot, the transom cover removed and the old closer, spindle plate and arm channel stripped out. The new closer bolts to a fresh mounting plate, a new arm drops into a new channel let into the top rail of the door, and the whole assembly is set for closing speed and final latching action once the leaf is re-hung. Both doors now close under control from fully open and latch quietly on the last few degrees.
New pivots under both leaves
The second fault was at floor level. Each leaf turns on a bottom pivot set into a threshold plate, and the bearing bushes in both had worn so far that the doors had dropped and were dragging as they swung — the loose bush and the scored old bolt are in the photographs. New pivot bolts and bushes went in with the closers, so the leaves hang square in their frames and the new arms are not fighting a door that sits low on one side. It is a small part, but changing it at the same time is the difference between a closer that lasts a couple of years and one that lasts fifteen.
Work completed at Sentinel House
- Transom closers — two original concealed closers removed and replaced with new Axim units, mounting plates and spindle plates.
