Old closer out, Adams Rite ARC51N in — inside a working dealership
The closer concealed in the transom of this door had simply reached the end of its service life. Like every sealed hydraulic closer, once the internal springs and seals wear, the door stops returning to a controlled, fully-latched position — and no amount of valve adjustment brings that back. The replacement unit was an Adams Rite ARC51N in EN4 power size — an ASSA ABLOY group concealed transom closer built for exactly this class of aluminium commercial entrance.
Because the closer sits inside the frame head, getting it out is the real work of the job. Our engineers lifted off the door leaf, removed the adjacent glazed screen sections and opened up the transom case — the photographs show the framing stripped back outside the entrance while the swap was made. The worn arm and channel assembly on the door came off with it; a new zinc-plated arm and channel went on so the new closer isn’t driving through worn linkage from day one.
Rebuilt, re-glazed, re-hung
With the new ARC51N secured in the transom case, everything went back in reverse order: screen sections re-glazed into the framing, door leaf re-hung on the restored hinge axis, and the leaf aligned to the frame and latching point. The closing speed and latching action were then set on the closer’s valves — a controlled sweep from any opening angle, with enough latching power to pull the door positively onto its latch every time.
Tested end to end — on video
The videos further down this page show the finished result: the entrance door swinging closed in one controlled movement and latching first time, and a close-up check of the door sitting square in its frame with even gaps around the leaf. For a transom closer replacement, that alignment check is the proof of the job — a door that closes softly but latches positively, with the closer completely hidden in the frame.
