Adams Rite is the leading specialist in narrow-stile mortice locks — the slim aluminium-frame locks that fit into APG and similar all-glass commercial entrance doors. If you have a hookbolt lock at the bottom of a glass shopfront door, there is a good chance it is an Adams Rite case.

Key points
  • Adams Rite MS1850S is the de-facto standard deadlock on UK narrow-stile aluminium doors.
  • Adams Rite 4710-series hookbolts are stocked for direct replacement on APG entrance doors.
  • 7400-series electric strikes retrofit most narrow-stile installations for access-control upgrades.
  • Many "APG locks" are Adams Rite product even where the door manufacturer brand is different.

What we install and repair from the Adams Rite range

Hookbolt mortice locks: the 4710 and 4730 hookbolts are the most common units we replace on APG and aluminium-framed commercial doors. The MS1850S deadlock is the parallel specification — same narrow-stile footprint, deadbolt rather than hookbolt. See sticking APG locks for the diagnostic-to-replacement workflow.

Deadlatches: the 4900-series is used where the door needs a latching deadbolt — common on retail back-of-house and office secondary entrances. We carry universal 4900-series replacements.

Electric strikes: the 7400-series adds remote electronic release to a narrow-stile mortice lock without rebuilding the door — the standard retrofit when an access-control upgrade goes in.

Why Adams Rite locks dominate APG entrances

The narrow stile of an APG door (typically 28–30 mm) doesn't accept standard mortice lock cases. Adams Rite designs specifically for this footprint and has done since the 1950s, which makes the brand the default specification for aluminium-framed glass entrances across most of the English-speaking commercial market. Cross-brand fit is unusual because no other manufacturer has the same depth of narrow-stile range.

Common Adams Rite faults

Hookbolt wear on the 4710/4730 — the standard end-of-life failure. Worn hookbolts no longer engage cleanly into the floor keep. Replacement is the fix. See sticking APG locks.

Floor keep misalignment — the keep plate works loose in the floor, the hookbolt arrives at an offset slot. Re-bedding the keep often resolves it without replacing the lock.

Cylinder wear on the MS1850S — replace the cylinder independently of the case.

Electric strike solenoid burn-out on the 7400 — replacement is the fix. We carry common 7400 variants.

Sourcing and stock

We hold universal-fit Adams Rite hookbolt cases and 7400-series electric strikes on the vans for same-day APG door repair. Genuine Adams Rite spares (specific keyway preservation, premium-finish strike plates) come direct from Allegion UK distribution.

Frequently asked

Quick answers on Adams Rite

01 My door has a hookbolt lock but no Adams Rite branding — is it still Adams Rite?

Possibly — Adams Rite locks are commonly fitted by other door manufacturers and may carry the door manufacturer's brand rather than the lock brand. Casework dimensions and the hookbolt profile usually identify Adams Rite product on inspection.

02 Can the original cylinder be kept when an Adams Rite lock case is replaced?

Yes in most cases — the cylinder is replaceable independently of the case. We transfer the existing cylinder where it is sound and the existing keying needs to be preserved.

03 Are Adams Rite locks high-security?

Adams Rite locks are commercial-grade rather than high-security-grade by default. For premium retail (jewellery, pharmacy) we pair Adams Rite cases with reinforced strike plates and keep guards as a supplementary upgrade.

04 How long do Adams Rite locks typically last?

A well-maintained Adams Rite hookbolt lock on a moderate-traffic shopfront lasts 10–15 years. High-traffic retail doors see lock replacements at 5–8 years; low-traffic offices can run 20 years.
