Why a worn door closer is a health and safety fault in a primary school
In an office or a shop a tired transom closer is a nuisance. In a primary school it is a reportable risk. An external classroom door that fails to close on its own leaves a room full of four-year-olds open to the playground and the street beyond it, which is a safeguarding failure before it is anything else. A door that slams instead is a crush hazard at exactly the height of a child’s fingers, and a leaf falling shut under its full spring can knock a reception-age child off their feet. Westglade’s review found doors in both states, and the school asked for the closers to be replaced rather than nursed along.
The doors themselves — white polyester-coated aluminium with blue pull handles, a mid-rail and a glazed upper panel — were sound. The problem was entirely in the head of each frame, where a concealed closer drives the leaf through an arm in the top rail. The new and old units side by side in the photographs are the same pattern; the difference is that the removed closer’s spindle had worn loose and its hydraulics no longer held a setting. On the single door to the Bees classroom, a surface-mounted overhead closer with an exposed arm had been added at some point as a stop-gap, and that door was surveyed alongside the rest.
Working around a school day
The job was done in term time, so the method mattered as much as the parts. Each door was boxed in with interlocking yellow barriers before any tools came out, so the open transom, the ladder and a leaf off its pivot were all out of reach from the playground side. Only one door was out of action at a time and the school chose the sequence so that every classroom kept an alternative way in and out. Inside each barrier the routine was the same: leaf off its bottom pivot, transom cover off, old closer and plate out, new closer, plate, arm and channel in, leaf re-hung, closing and latching speeds set slow enough to be safe and firm enough to latch. The main entrance under the Westglade sign was done last, with the barriers directing visitors to the office window.
Work completed at Westglade Primary & Nursery School
- Survey — every external door on the playground elevation and the main entrance checked for closer control, latching and arm condition.
- Transom closers — worn concealed closers removed from the main entrance double doors and the external classroom doors and replaced with new units and mounting plates.
- Arms and channels — new slide arms and top-rail channels where the originals were worn.
- Commissioning — closing and latching speeds set on every door for child-safe operation; latch engagement and lock cylinders checked.
- Safety — each work area cordoned with barriers; one door out of action at a time; school open throughout.
School and education door repairs across Nottingham
Commercial Door Maintenance and Security Ltd works for primary schools, academies and colleges across Nottingham — Top Valley, Bulwell, Arnold, Bestwood, Hucknall and the city estates — on the same pattern as Westglade: a survey of every external door, a quote by door, and term-time work behind barriers or larger programmes in the half-term. Transom and overhead closers, panic hardware on hall exits, fire door maintenance and key-fob entry on front doors are all routine. See our education sector page for how we schedule school work, or send a photograph of the door and we will quote the same day.
